Whitehills

Another wet day
Left Peterhead at 9 am and rounded Ratray head uneventfully with a 2Knot neap tide.
My previous horror of sailing into wind over tide with massive short waves not revisited.
Thankfully

Then on west along the Moray firth, now in gathering and increasing fog.
Some ganet cliffs on the way with thousands of wheeling birds.

Blind entry in to Whitehills on my previous tracks, in the dense mist very disconcerting, the moment you look away from the sea ahead and look back your eyes develope a searching nystagmus and a sense that the boat is turning.

Harbour Master came out to see us into the narrow approach (pics)

May head tomorrow for Cromarty so as to be best positioned to access the canal the next day.

So far we've covered 212 Nm in 42 hrs sailing (5.04Nm/hr) over 4days.

This is hard work
Were all tired

  1. Hi Lester, a little further along the coast is Cullen where there is a tiny fishmonger that makes fabulous Cullen skink. This next leg of your journey is beautiful passing through the Great Glen, lets hope the midges are still dormant, H and Jim

  2. You must be in the canal by now. You will really enjoy that - its easy sailing and great scenery. I am very jealous!

  3. Your last few words convey exhaustion. It's quite pleasant reading about it and looking at the pictures though. Thanks. Anyway, maybe easier in the Great Glen, unless all those locks between the lochs are manual.

  4. Try and get a meal at the Eagle - a converted Dutch Barge at Laggan Loch. You may need to ring ahead and book - food bought in specially.

The Eagle Barge – The only floating pub on the Caledonian Canal! This converted Dutch barge located at Laggan Locks is a fully licensed bar and restaurant specialising in seafood where proprietors Paul and Jan will give you a friendly welcome. Booking in advance is recommended.

  5. Lester! Sounds totally amazing!
As someone who has only sailed on a Neilsen flotilla in warm sunshine with full back up and no tide this is just awesome! Enjoy yourself!
